Archive: Race Updates 2008 Archive: Race Updates 2009 Back to Race Updates Sandown - Aug 2 Sunday morning saw an early start for the race team with double duty with 2 races in the Jesus. All about life V8 Ute and one in the Jesus Mini. The first race for the team was the V8 Ute reverse grid race (RGR as the princess likes to call it). This saw the Jesus ute starting from last position due to Fishtails indiscretion from race 1. Fishtail got a good start however the natives were restless as usual and there was a significant accident at turn 1 on the second lap that saw the Air Vanuatu Ute hit in the side causing it to roll over. This created further chaos with cars running off the track eventually resulting in a safety car period after which the race was called off after just 7 laps. This actually resulted in the race being declared a non event because it had not lasted the required 75% of the set race distance. Race 3 for the Mini was up next and this saw the Jesus Mini starting off grid position 10. The Jesus Mini had a great tussle with a number of competitors. Andrew bought the car home in 10th place with not a mark on the car which was great. He set a great lap time in this race as well which showed that he was getting his head around how to race the front wheel drive turbo Mini. Race 3 in the Ute was up next. Due to the cancellation of Race 2 the Jesus Ute lined up on grid position number 17. Andrew got a great start and was motoring down to turn 1 when chaos prevailed once again, George Miedecke missed a gear and was punted from behind by Jack Elsegood, Fishtail managed to get through the carnage and got up to 12th after lap one. Fishtail continued to push hard and made it through to 8th with a brave late move through turn 6 over the top of the hill on the last lap. Many of the series front runners had poor results in this race which has helped the Jesus Racing team make up some points on the front of the field that they lost in race 1. All in all the weekend was another positive weekend for the ministry, the experiment with the Jesus Mini was very interesting with the team receiving great feedback from the fans. Steve Peach explained “ running in a another series opened up the opportunity to engage with a whole new group of people which is what the ministry is all about”. The boys ended the weekend with a visit to the Canterbury Presbyterian Church where they engaged with the folk about the ministry of Jesus Racing. Steve then took the opportunity to share a message based around ACTS 17. The weekend was especially encouraging having Steve’s family joining the boys at the track as well as John Grullis from ZX1 and Ian Watkinson from IKanSleep both sponsors of the Jesus Ute. The team also had their good friends and supporters Marc and Julie Waddell travel from WA to spend some time with the team. Andrew and Stephen stay on in Melbourne for a couple of days of ministry so please keep them in your prayers, especially as they travel back mid week. God Bless. The Jesus Racing Team Sandown - Aug 1 Saturday at Sandown in Victoria started with some very chilly temperatures in Melbourne. Unfortunately the day didn’t seem to warn up too much for the team either. The Yokohama V8 Ute series had two sessions on the Saturday. “Fishtail” got underway in the Ute with qualifying. Andrew put down some great laps early with the session threatening rain. For most of the session he was in 5th place and feeling comfortable during the 20 minute that got a little greasy only a few minutes in. With a couple of minutes to go the conditions were at their best and Andrew was on his fastest lap. Unfortunately a mistake on the last turn ruined the lap but within the last 30 seconds two other drivers put down solid times. Andrew qualified in 7th overall. Race 1 in the Yokohama V8 Ute Series was directly after the Mini race. The transition was tight and saw Andrew having to run from one end of pit lane to the other to get to the Ute in time. Turn 1 had Andrew out brake himself on cold tyres making contact with Craig Dontas. Both drivers went off and the Jesus Ute sustained a damaged wheel as a result of the contact. The team changed the wheel but the Number 9 Ute went down a lap destroying any chance of a positive result. It was a disappointing result particularly given the fact that the mistake hurt someone else’s race which is obviously not an overly positive situation for the team. The Mini’s on the other hand were a more enjoyable experience. Race 1 got underway early and had Andrew off 13th position in the “Jesus Mini”. Andrew made a great start and was travelling well, up to 8th position at the end of the first lap. Unfortunately there was a major accident at the fastest turn of the track and the race had to be cancelled and declared a non event. The result of the 1st race meant that Andrew again started off position 13. Andrew had a number of great battles throughout the race receiving a lot of TV coverage for the “Jesus All About Life Mini”. Andrew finished his first ever Mini Challenge race in 10th position having thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Sunday sees the team compete in the final Mini race and two more Ute races. The up side to the busy day was again outstanding coverage for the Jesus Race team with channel 7 trialling a new suspension camera under the right front suspension. This was the same wheel that was damaged at turn 1 in the Ute race and the viewers at the track were able to watch the wheel being changed from inside the front wheel well. Quite unique! We’ll keep you informed of Sunday’s outcomes. Thanks for your support, The Jesus Racing Team. Sandown - July 31 Friday at Sandown started in a relaxed fashion for the Jesus Racing Team. Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher only had the one practice session in the Ute in the early part of the morning. Fishtail finished the session in 7th place with a straight car with just a couple of changes made at the end of the practice resulting in the fastest lap being the last one which bodes well for Saturday’s qualifying session. The afternoon looked like it was going to be a relaxing time with all the work completed on the Ute until Andrew was offered the opportunity to run a Mini in the Mini Challenge Cup. The option was certainly last minute and created a bit of stress for Andrew and the team to get the car ready. Fisher went out for the qualifying session in the number 16 white mini but unfortunately it suffered an electrical fault after just 3 laps and Andrew was stranded on the second corner. Needless to say the opportunity is being re-evaluated in respect to the reliability of the Mini. The Mini mechanics will make a decision about it’s condition over night and a final decision will be made on Saturday morning. We’ll keep you informed of all the results across the weekend. Tamworth - July 21 Sunday is the big day at Townsville and for Jesus Racing it started with a buzz with Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher starting off position 3 on the grid. Fishtail made a great start and was putting a lot of pressure on Paul Williams in 2nd place. Around the back of the circuit the Jesus Ute pinched a tyre over a curb and the right front tyre was deflating quickly. The car was turning left fine but when Andrew approached the next right hander the car was very reluctant to turn as the tyre was rapidly losing pressure. Andrew had just moved into second place at the time but had to attempt to limp back to the pits for the team to change the tyre. Unfortunately the tyre completely shredded on the way back and damaged the wiring loom under the front guard stranding Fisher on the track. Race 3 saw the Jesus Ute start from 18th position after some speedy electrical work between races. Another good start and a number of solid passes saw “Fishtail” make his way through to 12th position. Race 3 saw the team feel like they had a pretty good grasp on set up for the car but the tyre trouble in the earlier races had stopped any chance of a great overall result. Sunday night had Andrew and Steve presenting at the Christian Outreach Centre just out of town. The Snr Pastor informed Steve that the evening was a great encouragement to the church who were very interested to hear the story of Jesus Racing and Andrew’s faithfulness. After a good night’s sleep Andrew had a couple of interviews with radio stations and then he and Steve presented at the Cleveland Juvenile Detention Centre in Townsville. The detention centre brought all the boys together for over an hour to hear the Jesus Racing presentation on making courageous decisions. Every boy present took one of the Jesus Racing Gospel’s of Luke and were really excited about having a V8 driver come to visit them. Both
Andrew and Steve have been noticing in the last couple of months the
obvious development of relationships with the Motor Sport community as
Jesus Racing continues to cement itself as a well known and accepted
part of the V8 community. Please continue to pray for the example that
Jesus Racing seeks to bring to not only the V8 community but also to
schools, men’s and community events around the country. The Jesus Team Tamworth - July 20 Things got underway in the cool of the morning for Jesus Racing with Andrew and the team arriving at the track early. Qualifying for the Utes was at 8.40 am and would give the Jesus Ute its best opportunity to be up the front with the cooler conditions. Qualifying is just a 20 minute session so you need to be on the pace straight away. The majority of the session saw “Fishtail” in the top ten but the car was still suffering from mid corner understeer despite overnight changes and was proving to be a handful in the middle section of the track which has the majority of fast turns. The end of the session had the Jesus Ute in 11th place with the car a bit over a second off the fastest time. Some more changes were made prior to the first race at 1pm. The first lap was action packed with a couple of the Holden’s behind Andrew making fast starts. There were some positions swapped in the first couple of turns up the front and some mayhem mid pack. A big crash after a flywheel failure for Justin Van Twest saw the Capalaba Wreckers Holden into the tyre wall at high speed just behind Andrew. After the dust settled and the race restarted, having travelled for a few laps behind the safety car “Fishtail” was in 14th place and remained there for the duration. The Jesus Ute suffered some rear end damage after getting hit from behind just before the restart but no substantial damage. At the end of the race the team discovered that the right hand front tyre was slowly deflating which would not have helped things it also makes it difficult to determine whether the changes made had really helped. Sunday’s first race will be the Reverse Grid race with Andrew starting off 3rd position assuming there are no penalties applied from the first race. The team will work hard overnight to make sure the car is as fast as possible. Race 3 start positions are determined by the combined results of the first 2 races. We’ll let you know how it all goes. Regards, The Jesus Racing Team. Tamworth - July 19 After a year of planning Friday saw the drivers hit the Townsville street circuit for the first time, as a demonstration of just what an impact this race meeting is making in the Nth Queensland region a crowd of over 48,000 people turned up for the Friday action. The Yokohama V8 Ute drivers were the 3rd category on track and Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher recorded the 10th fastest time. Although the track was slippery and loose “Fishtail” came to terms with the new track quite quickly and mid way through the session the team felt they had a good understanding of what changes they need to make to the Jesus Ute to make it fast at Townsville. Not everyone was so fortunate in the Utes with a couple of guys having significant contact with the wall at turn 9 coming onto the back straight. Unfortunately one of the Holden drivers has done significant damage to his car at the same turn and won’t participate anymore over this weekend. Andrew had a minor brush with the same wall as he was doing his best to get the best out of the Jesus Ute. The Utes only have one practice session so its straight into qualifying on Saturday morning at 8.45 am then race 1 after lunch. This race will be live to air on channel 7 at 2 pm so make sure the video is set if you won’t be home. The
team feel positive about the changes they’ve made to the set up the car
for qualifying and are therefore confident for Saturday’s racing. Jesus Racing Team Darwin - June 21 The Reverse Grid Race (RGR) kicked off at 10.20 Darwin time with Andrew "Fishtail" Fisher starting in 6th position after finishing 11th in the first race at Hidden Valley in Darwin. The highlight of race 2 was the Steve Robinson causing the Jesus Ute to run wide on the exit, as he rejoined the track he was then hit by Scott Jennings who had no where to go as he was being squeezed himself. This hit broke the front left wheel and thus ended the race for the team. It was a short turn around time for the team to get ready for race 3. The Jesus. All about life V8 Ute was to start in 17th position. Fishtail made his best start of the weekend and made up several places on the first lap, he pushed on and by lap 5 was already in 10th position. Unfortunately the bad luck for the weekend continued at turn 5 when Yanis Derums decided to smash into the side of the Jesus ute as it was mid way through the corner knocking the ute off the track and causing the team to lose 9 places (Derums was later charged for the infringement) Fishtail put his head down as managed to get back ntry to turn one, Andrew made up great ground under brakes, unfortunately that was as good as it got being hit in the side by it wasn't to be for Andrew in this race, Jesus Racing Team Darwin - June 20 It was a magnificient morning in the Top End - a little fresh by local standards but just perfect for the tourists. Andrew "Fishtail" Fisher headed out to qualifying at around 10.30am. Hopes were high after being 4th in P1 and P2. Andrew posted a couple of really fast sectors in the first lap but unfortunately didn't get notification that another car had dropped some oil on the track and drove through it and speared right off the track causing a massive flat spot on his front right tyre. The session was red flagged and after the re-start Andrew found it difficult to get the required time out of the car, eventually qualifying 9th. By the time it was race-time just after 2pm, things had really heated up. The air temperature was around the mid-30s but was over 50 degrees in the car. Andrew had a fairly good start and was tussling with Kim Jane early in the race. As the race went on, it became clear that the Fords didn't cope with the heat as well as the Holdens as they were consistently losing over 0.6 of a second down the main straight. Andrew's oiil light had also come on whilst he was on the starting grid which was an unnecessary distraction. Although it turned out to be just a faulty wire, Andrew delibertately changed gears early in an attempt to save any potential damage to the motor. In a rare occurence for the Ute series, there were no major incidents and no safety car periods. Andrew managed to bring home the car in 11th position, one of only 4 Fords in the first 11 places. Andrew was disappointed given the promising practice sessions but is hoping that a few changes being made overnight to improve the balance of the car might bear fruit. Race 2 being the Reverse Grid Race (RGR) sees Andrew start from 6th. Don't forget to tune into Channel 7 from 12.30pm tomorrow to see Race 2 live and cheer on the Jesus Ute. Regards The Jesus Racing Team Darwin - June 19 The Jesus Racing team arrived in Darwin missing one of it's important members. Steve "Princess" Peach is taking a well deserved break with his family and therefore will miss his first round since joining the team last year. New on board for the Hidden Valley Round is sponsor Lubes Direct who are a distributor of the Mobil 1 branded products based out in Western Sydney. Andrew 'Fishtail' Fisher said, "it is great to have Steve Joy the owner of Lubes Direct on Board, we have been speaking to Mobil 1 for some time and believe that the partnership will develop into an exceptionally positive marketing and technical alliance which is great for the team." Hot dry weather greeted the team on arrival and on the track it was particularly hot. The team got the weekend off to a strong start with 4th place in both practice one and two. The Team was pleased with this performance and has made a couple of changes they hope take them in the right direction when qualifying on Saturday. Saturday also sees Race 1, so stay tuned for all the details over the weekend. God Bless The Jesus Racing Team Symmons Plains - May 30 The morning started with the Reverse Grid race where the Jesus. All about life Ute started off 13th spot. Andrew managed to get his best start of the season and was able to hold position into the first and second corner. Andrew picked up 2 spots at turn 4 with a great late braking passing manoeuvre. Andrew put his head down and despite having a clutch issue was able to pass a total of 10 cars in order to come home in 3rd spot. The team had to work hard between races to drop the gearbox out to inspect the clutch. It was determined that it was the slave cylinder that was the problem and so the team replaced it and was ready to go. It would be Jesus Racing's best ever start in race 3 with Andrew being in position 2 on the front row of the grid. Andrew got a great start as did Layton Cranbrook by the time they reached the 3rd corner the pair had already built up a 150m gap. Andrew could have made a couple of moves in order to take the lead but felt it was better to just settle in and run hard with Layton at the front. They built up around a 4 second lead and on the last lap Andrew was just .9 of a second behind Layton, Andrew pushed hard to place pressure on Layton however he missed a gear coming out of the hair pin and had to settle for second place in the race and the round. The team was very excited and the car was pretty straight so it was a great way to bounce back after a disappointing Winton Round. This moves the team into 8th spot on the ladder and now just 27 points off second place in the championship. Jesus Racing Team Symmons Plains - May 29 8 degree’s Celsius is what greeted the Jesus Racing team at Symmons Plains on the first day on track. Dry conditions but cold are good for the Ford’s in the Ute series and Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher didn’t disappoint. Friday has seen the Jesus Ute in the top 5 in the first session and 4th in the second session. After the engine rebuild as a result of the Winton round and a shake down the previous weekend the team were confident the car was in good shape and the results of Friday suggest that’s the case. Qualifying in the Utes takes place on the Saturday morning with race one in the afternoon. It’s all about putting together a good lap for qualifying in the morning session. “There is a lot of guys with very close times in the top 10” says Fisher "so we need to put it together on the day." It’s also great to have 99.7 Rhema FM Newcastle on board for this weekend’s race as the windscreen banner sponsor. As a team we love to work alongside ministries to give support and exposure for them and its fantastic to have Rhema on for this round. Make sure you set your VCR’s for Saturday 2pm (check your local guides) afternoon as the Ute series will carry a live race during the Super Car series. We’ll keep you informed of the results as the weekend goes by. In His service, The Jesus Racing Team. Winton - May 3 - Day 3 Not a great day for the Jesus Racing team today (Sunday). Having finished in 4th place in Race 1 "Fishtail" had to start from position 13 on the grid. All went well at the start although by turn one he had lost a couple of spots in the argy bargy of turn 1. "Fishtail" put his head down and started working his way forward moving through the pack with current championship leader Gary Baxter. The two battled hard getting past a number of cars whilst at the same time exchanging positions several times. Both "Chucky" Baxter and "Fishtail" had the pace on the cars in front of them and soon moved into the top 10. Unfortunately on lap 8 the camshaft bolt broke (part of the engine) on the Jesus Ute thus causing the timing chain to break and ending the race for the Jesus. All about life V8 ute. Given that parts of the timing chain and gear ended up inside the engine somewhere it was decided to not risk further damage to the engine and therefore park the car for Race 3. Obviously this is a real disappointment for the whole team as it may mean a full engine rebuild after having just rebuilt the engine prior to the start of the season! The positive from the weekend is that the team was well and truly on the pace and able to mix it up with the Championship leaders. The team now turns its attention to Symonds Plains for the next round of the Yokohama V8 Ute Series, Andrew has his first hit out in the Ford V8 Supercar this Friday and in between now and then both Andrew and Steve "Princess" Peach travel to Tamworth and Armidale in order to speak at 4 schools and conduct a men's event on the Wednesday night. Please keep the boys in your prayers in regards to their travels as well as the effectiveness of the ministry as they meet with the Students and the Men this coming week. God Bless The Jesus Racing Team Winton - May 2 - Day 2 Day 2 got underway with a strong showing from Andrew ”Fishtail” Fisher and the Jesus Racing team. Qualifying was at 10.30 in the morning and all the guys who were quick in the two practice sessions were fast again in official qualifying. Andrew was again on the pace of the leading pack and finished the qualifying session in third place. That would see him starting from grid spot 3 for the first race in the afternoon, this is the highest qualifying we have had with the Jesus Racing V8 ute. Race one got underway late in the afternoon after the first super car race so the track had good grip compared to the morning. Gary Baxter made a scorching start from next to Andrew on the second row of the grid jumping straight into second by the first turn. Jack Elsegood was also solid off the start leading into the first turn. The race itself was fairly uneventful with “Fishtail” protecting his 4th place from lap 1 until the finish of the race. He was pleased to finish in front of both the 2007 and the 2008 champions. Andrew felt the car was not quite as tuned to the circuit as in qualifying and therefore the team will make some minor changes over night and asses the conditions in the morning. Race 2 will start at 11am with Andrew off 13th position in the reverse grid race before the final race at 3.30 pm. “It’s good to come into the second day of racing with a straight car after a great result” said Fisher and feels confident for Sunday’s racing. We’ll keep you informed as it all unfolds. The Jesus Racing Team. Winton - May 1 - Day 1 Jesus Racing arrived at Winton in country Victoria for the second round of the Yokohama V8 Ute series on Thursday afternoon. Winton is not traditionally a big crowd drawing event given its remote location but there is always great racing at the circuit. Andrew and the team were feeling confident after the test the week before at Wakefield Park in NSW and were hoping to get off to a solid start to the weekend with 2 good practice sessions on the Friday. Session one was at 9.30 in the morning with a threatening sky. The forecast was predicting a chance of rain but it never materialized. Andrew got underway well and felt the car was strong. Towards the end of the session he put his head down and was able to get a couple of clear laps in the cold conditions and was able to finish the session in 1st place. This was a fantastic result and the first time the Jesus Ute was able to finish on the top of the time sheets during practice. The second session for the V8 Ute’s was held mid afternoon after some more rubber had been laid down by the Super Cars. The team made a few tweaks and changes and had high hopes of moving further forward in terms of lap times. Andrew was very quick in this session and was able to finish second practice in 3rd place only 3 tenths off the time Gary Baxter put down in 1st place. All up the team was extremely happy with the first day on track action. Tomorrow sees the official qualifying session in the morning and race 1 in the afternoon, followed by 2 races on Sunday. We’ll keep you posted as the action unfolds. The Jesus Racing Team. Clipsal 500 - March 22 - Day 3 Well, the Sunday in Adelaide was definitely much cooler than the previous day with only 23 degrees as the predicted top. Good news for the Ute drivers who were taking to the track at 11.20 am. Andrew would be starting from 7th position on the grid and was definitely looking for a strong finish to the weekend. Andrew made a great start off the grid, the best of the weekend but went into turn 1 in 8th place as Craig Dontas had the inside run. The first couple of laps were hectic with the field sorting itself out and the tyres were coming up to temperature. As the race went on Fishtail managed to get past Dontas and get his way up to 6th position and was going strong. Around lap 4 some warning lights came up on the dash and Andrew and the pit crew had some trouble with radio contact. Although a little bit of a distraction Fishertail was able to press on but the back of the car was quite loose for the last 3 laps. Things got really interesting with 2 laps to go with the car having an intermittent miss coming out of left hand turns. It proved quite a problem in the last couple of laps and the car would cough and splutter each time Fishtail came onto the straights unfortunaley this caused him to lose 5 positions in the last 1.5 laps which saw Andrew managed to limp the Jesus Ute home in 11th position. It wasn’t too much of a lose for the team though, the number 9 Jesus Falcon finished in 7th position overall for the weekend. Without the miss in the last couple of laps Andrew would have finished in the top 6 which would have left us in 6th position for the weekend. All in all it was a good start to year with only a couple of battle scars to show for the weekend. The work didn’t stop for Jesus Racing though. With the boys presenting at Brighton High School on Monday. Brighton is the largest school in the state and it’s a great privilege for Andrew and Steve to share some of the journey of Jesus Racing with the students. At the same time the race car is on its way to Brisbane for a couple of major events at Christian City Church men’s conference and then to Easter fest at Toowoomba where the boys will join the Compassion organisation on their stand before they and the race car head home to be prepared for the Winton Round of racing coming up in May. We’ll keep you informed of all that goes on in the meantime and keep praying for the contact the boys have with students across the country as well the impact of Jesus Racing in the Australian Motor Sport scene. The Jesus Racing team Clipsal 500 - March 21 - Day 2 A warmish day greeted the Jesus Racing team on the Saturday at the Clipsal 500. Fortunately the race was early at 9.20am before it got too hot. “Fishtail” woke up fairly stiff with his sore back but did his physio instructed exercises before the race which assisted him. Race 2 had Andrew starting from 11th position for the reverse grid and with a couple of late changes to make sure the car was at its best. Unfortunately Andrew failed to engage first gear correctly and therefore he missed the start which meant he dropped back to about 17th after the first couple of corners although he was just happy that someone did not run up the back of him. At the completion of the first lap Andrew had clawed his way back to 13th position and was right back in the mix. A fairly big accident at the infamous turn 8 saw Grant Johnson retire with a lot of damage to his Commodore with a precautionary visit to the hospital. After the restart Andrew was straight back into it and had a great scrap with Craig Dontas and then Greg Willis to finish in 10th position. Again Andrew was very happy with the car and is looking forward to a solid race 3 on Sunday morning at 11.20am. The 10th position puts the Jesus Racing Falcon in 6th position overall for the weekend. The team are hoping to keep moving forward in the final race on Sunday. Don't forget the race will be telecast as apart of the V8 Super Car coverage on channel 7 at 1pm EDST. The Jesus Racing Team. Clipsal 500 - March 20 - Day 1 The day got off to a leisurely pace for Jesus Racing. The program for racing didn’t see Andrew required until 3pm for his first race of the season. Just as well as he needed to continue his treatment on his back after hurting it the previous day. The team however were busy making sure the car was in perfect condition, to give Andrew the best race car possible for the afternoon’s race. After an hour at the physio and some strapping to support his back Andrew felt ready to go to work and focus on the racing. Race one got underway just after 4pm with the temperature still in the 30’s, not ideal for the Ford’s that tend to have issues with overheating. Andrew made a good start from 6th position, but so did some competitors around him and was in position 8 after the first lap. There was a tussle throughout the race with Kim Jane, the 2008 Championship runner up iwith Kim getting by Andrew on lap 3. The battle continued for the next four laps until Andrew made a great pass on Kim at the end of the back straight. He then managed to build a bit of a gap on Kim through to the completion. “Fishtail” held strong in the Jesus Ute which with its new color scheme received most of the attantion from the comentators and camera crews with only a couple of scratches and brought the car home in 6th position after Ryall Harris was penalised for passing under a yellow flag. A short turn around over night sees the racing commence again just after 9.00 am for the Yokohama Utes and Andrew will start off 11th position for the reverse grid race. A combined total of the 2 races determines your start position for Sunday’s final race. Tune your TV into channel 7 at 1pm on Sat and Sun to see all the "as live" action of the 2nd and 3rd races .
